Carrera was founded in Austria in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger as sports eyewear manufacturer Wilhelm Anger Werker, which was inspired by the Carrera Panamericana auto race.

In 1964, Wilhelm Anger developed and patented the ' Optyl' material, a heat-cured plastic that weighed 20% less than acetate, resulting in a reduction in allergic reactions and an improved fit through a memory effect that provided lasting elasticity and dimensional stability.

In 1974 the company was renamed Carrera International and established a headquarters in Traun, Austria. In collaboration with car designer Ferdinand Alexander, the company developed the Carrera Porsche Design sunglasses collection.
